Insurance Payment

Nurse midwives are reimbursed by:

  • Most commercial insurance plans
  • Medi-Cal (Medicaid coverage is mandated in all states)
  • Medicare
  • TRICARE
  • Direct out-of-pocket payment, which is sometimes reimbursed by commercial insurance

Nurse midwives are often members of a multi-provider practice or employees of a hospital, through which they obtain malpractice insurance.

Nurse midwives can enroll as Medi-Cal providers through physician groups. They also can enroll as individual providers or as clinic-based certified nurse midwife providers.

Licensed midwives are paid by:

  • Medi-Cal (13 states’ Medicaid plans include LMs)
  • Some commercial insurance plans (mandated in 6 states)
  • Direct out-of-pocket payment, which is sometimes reimbursed by commercial insurance

Licensed midwives are often solo practitioners or in small group practices. They must obtain their own malpractice insurance to be reimbursed by Medi-Cal.

Licensed midwives can enroll as Medi-Cal providers through the Department of Health Care Services.
